Many homeowners question whether metal fence posts need concrete. The short answer is it depends. In some cases, metal fence posts can be installed without concrete, however, it is recommended you use concrete in areas with high winds. Concrete is a great way to secure your posts, and it is relatively inexpensive. Therefore, if you are planning to install a new fence, we recommend anchoring each fence post in concrete, so that it will stand tall for many years to come.
What happens if you anchor metal fence posts without concrete?
In the UK, you will find many examples of fence posts being anchored with gravel, resulting in surprisingly strong anchors that also drain away moisture to prevent water damage. Posts can also be secured using fence post spikes, which are specially made metal anchoring spikes that don't require digging to install. These solutions are ideal if you’re not looking to use concrete, however, you may not be guaranteed the same level of sturdiness.
How deep should a metal fence post be?
The hole depth should be 1/3 to 1/2 the post height above ground. For example, a 6-foot-tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet. If your soil is very sandy or loose, you may need to go deeper than 1/3 of the post height. Remember, installing your fence with concrete is always the safest and most secure option.
Why are metal fence posts becoming more popular?
Storm Dudley and Eunice hit the UK in February 2022, exposing many thousands of weak fence panels, posts and gates across the UK. With winds reaching up to 100mph in some areas, it's no wonder that many homeowners' fences were destroyed. Metal fence posts offer a much more robust option and can withstand high winds much better than wooden posts. If you want to install a new fence, consider metal fence posts as they are becoming more popular and offer many advantages.
